A trip to Phe Phe Falls had been on our to-do list for a while. We had hoped to visit it during our last journey to Meghalaya in 2018, but the waterfall was relatively unknown at that time. Since then, its popularity has surged, making it one of the top waterfalls in Meghalaya. Although we missed it on our 2018 visit, we were determined not to overlook it this time. We had heard that the waterfall’s flow would be less impressive in January compared to the monsoon season, but our adventurous spirit was set on experiencing Phe Phe Falls.

Phe Phe Falls is situated in Shkentalang Village near Jarain in the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, along the Jowai-Dawki Road. It is approximately 80 km from Shillong and about 20 km from Jowai, the district headquarters. To reach the falls, you will need to walk a short distance and then trek to the waterfall.
Trip to Phe Phe Falls
Upon arriving in Guwahati, we opted to drive straight to Jowai instead of stopping in Shillong, as our focus was exploring the Jaintia Hills and the Grao Hills. We reached Jowai around midday and set off for the waterfall.
Phe Phe Falls is located near Jarain, about 20 km from Jowai, on the Jowai-Dawki Road. We followed Google Maps and sought directions from locals, learning that GPS can be unreliable in these regions.
We drove along Jowai-Dawki Road, took a left turn after passing a church, which led us on a less common route to Phe Phe Falls. This path took us past a seemingly abandoned resort and a rocky trail with a narrow stream to cross. We encountered pitcher plants along the way and observed a local child drinking from one!
We reached a large meadow and parked our car there. The meadow offered a distant view of the river, which we would have had to cross if we had taken the other route. We proceeded towards the waterfall and soon caught our first glimpse.
First Impressions
A winding downhill path led us to the base of the falls. As with many Meghalaya waterfalls, reaching the full view involves a hike. We descended a bamboo-lined trail for about 15 minutes, passing through bamboo plantations and catching glimpses of the falls along the way.
The Phe Phe Falls cascades into a turquoise pool from an impressive cliff, creating a magnificent view. I stood mesmerized by the sight, marveling at its beauty.

Phe Phe Falls, also known as Phea Phea Falls, is truly spectacular. Its two-tiered structure is remarkable, with the base tier visible from our vantage point. In the local Jaintia dialect, “Phe Phe” means “Paradise,” and the serene blue pool and surrounding rocks certainly feel like paradise. The allure of the waterfall invites you to take a dip in the pool, though we chose to admire its beauty from the shore.

We spent an hour soaking in the beauty of Phe Phe Falls, taking photos, and creating lasting memories. As we began our hike back to the meadow, the sunset painted the sky, adding a perfect ending to our day. We decided to stay and watch the sunset rather than rush to see the upper tier of the falls, appreciating the moment.
